Kate Haworth is a Senior Lecturer at Aston University's Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics, part of the School of Communication and Culture. As Director of the Spoken Interaction in Legal Contexts (SILC) research centre, she focuses on language in legal contexts, particularly investigative interviews and forensic linguistics. She holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham and previously worked as a barrister and parliamentary counsel. Since 2013, she has been employed part-time at Aston, working Tuesdays to Thursdays. Her research explores spoken interaction in legal settings, language as evidence, and strengthening links between research and professional practice through training for police forces.
Education includes a BA in Classical Studies (University of Liverpool), MA in Applied Linguistics (University of Nottingham), and a PhD on police interviewing. She has led projects like the 'For the Record' initiative funded by Research England and collaborates with police forces on training and research. Awards include the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics.
Her teaching spans modules on forensic linguistics and legal discourse at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has supervised numerous dissertations and directed programs like the MSc Forensic Linguistics (distance learning). Research interests include institutional discourse, critical discourse analysis, and the role of language in legal evidence.
