Professor Kate Curtis AO is a globally recognized academic and clinician in emergency and trauma nursing at the University of Sydney's Sydney Nursing School. She holds dual roles as Director of Emergency Research at ISLHD and a Registered Nurse in Wollongong Emergency Department. With 33 years of frontline experience, her work focuses on translational research to improve care delivery, particularly through her HIRAID® framework, implemented in 130+ Australian EDs. She has secured over $28.2m in research funding and authored 260+ publications with an h-index of 42. Awards include the 2024 USA ENA Nurse Researcher Award and Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for contributions to trauma nursing and research.
Education: PhD(UNSW), MsNurs(Hons)(UOW), GradDipCritCare(USYD), BNurs(UOW).
Research interests include emergency care systems, patient safety, clinician behavior change, and longitudinal outcomes. Current projects include scaling HIRAID® to inpatient care (HIRAID-Inpatient) and international adaptations in Denmark, South Africa, and Thailand.
Grants include NHMRC Partnership Grants and MRFF awards. Leadership roles include Co-Chair of ANZ Trauma Registry and NSW Institute of Trauma Research Committee. She mentors over 70 clinicians and supervises 13 PhD students. Awards highlight her impact in clinical practice, education, and policy.
International collaborations span Denmark (Aarhus University), South Africa (Stellenbosch University), Sweden (Dalarna University), and Thailand (Mae Fah Luang University). Projects address global challenges in emergency nursing standards and trauma care.
