Professor Kate Cavanagh is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Sussex's School of Psychology, where she has held academic positions since 2007. She previously served as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology (2009-2019) before her promotion to full Professor in 2019. Her professional background includes clinical work as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with the Newcastle, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust (2007-2009) and senior psychology roles in private and academic settings.
Her educational background includes a D.Phil in Psychology from the University of Sussex (1995-1999), a D.Clin.Psychol from the University of Newcastle (2004-2007), and a Post-graduate Diploma in Cognitive Therapy from the Newcastle Cognitive Therapy Centre (2008-2009).
Professor Cavanagh's research focuses on the development, evaluation, and implementation of self-help and digital mental health technologies for common mental health problems. Her work explores engagement and outcomes associated with contemporary interventions, with particular emphasis on cognitive behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches. She investigates mediators and moderators of intervention effects across public health, occupational health, and healthcare contexts. Her research program spans digital therapeutics, breathwork interventions, sleep health technologies, and accessibility improvements for mental health services.
Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on digital mental health solutions, with recent work examining mindfulness applications, breathwork therapies, and interventions for specific populations including healthcare workers, adolescents, and individuals with psychosis or borderline personality disorder. Her research frequently employs rigorous methodologies including randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.
Professor Cavanagh serves as Course Director for the MSc Foundations of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health program at Sussex. Her teaching focuses on Clinical Psychology, Common mental health problems, and Research methods in clinical psychology. She maintains weekly student feedback and drop-in sessions during term time.
Her research has been supported by significant funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and industry partners including Headspace and Unmind. Current projects include evaluating app-based tools for sleep health, increasing access to CBT for psychosis patients, and optimizing mindfulness interventions in healthcare settings.
Professor Cavanagh has held leadership roles including President-Elect of the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions (ISRII) and Founding Director of the European Society for Research on Internet Interventions (ESRII). She serves on multiple committees including the Digital Healthcare Committee and various Trial Steering Committees, and provides research consultancy to healthcare organizations exploring digital mental health implementation.
