Kate Bowler is an Associate Professor of American Religious History at Duke University, affiliated with the Duke Divinity School's Department of Religion. Her research focuses on the prosperity gospel, gender roles in American evangelicalism, and intersections of faith, health, and suffering. She earned a Ph.D. from Duke University, an M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School, and a B.A. from Macalester College.
Her award-winning book *Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel* (2013) explores the movement’s origins and societal impact. After a 2015 Stage IV cancer diagnosis, she authored the bestselling memoir *Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I’ve Loved)* (2018), critiquing American cultural narratives about suffering. She hosts the podcast *Everything Happens*, featuring conversations on resilience and meaning-making.
Recent works include *The Preacher’s Wife: Women and Power in American Megaministry* (2019) and *No Cure for Being Human* (2022). She received a sabbatical grant from The Louisville Institute to study celebrity Christian women’s influence. Her courses at Duke include *Everything Happens: Themes in American Religion* and *Donald Trump, TV Preachers, and the American Prosperity Gospel*.
