Kate Boersma, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of San Diego. Her research focuses on aquatic community ecology in fragmented arid-land streams, particularly examining how species adapt to extreme environmental conditions like drought. She holds a PhD in Zoology from Oregon State University (2013), an MS in Fisheries Science (2007), and a BA in Environmental Science from Northwestern University (2001).
Research Interests:
- Ecological and evolutionary drivers of species distributions
- Resistance/resilience of communities to perturbations
- Evolutionary adaptations to extreme drought
- Functional trait analysis and community dynamics
Grants & Awards:
- NSF ADVANCE Subaward (2011)
- National Park Service Climate Change Fellowship (2010)
- World Wildlife Fund Fuller Fellowship (2010)
- Herbert F. Frolander Teaching Award (2012)
Teaching: Courses include Human Anatomy & Physiology, Scientific Teaching Methods, and contributes to introductory biology curricula. Active in developing inclusive pedagogy through programs like FORWARD to Professorship.
Service: Serves on awards committees for professional societies, founded OSU Women in Science (200+ members), and leads outreach programs like Science and Nature in Tandem for Youth (SANITY).
