Kate Black is a Professor of Management Learning and Education at Northumbria University's Leadership and Human Resource Management Department. She currently serves as Director of Education within the Business School and holds leadership roles in the British Academy of Management (BAM), including co-chairing its Management Knowledge and Education (MKE) division. Her professional journey spans marine ecology, HR management in retail, and over a decade in academia.
Dr. Black earned her PhD part-time from Lancaster University (2013), focusing on professional learning within multi-agency teams in local authority Children’s Services. Her research emphasizes identity formation through workplace learning, intergenerational knowledge exchange, and innovative qualitative methods like photo-elicitation and artefactual conversations.
Her pedagogic work addresses student engagement, dissertation methodologies, and inclusive learning strategies. Key themes in her publications include reflective practice, later-career identity, and sustainability in business education. She has co-authored major works like the Handbook of Inclusive Learning and Teaching in Business and Management (2025).
