Dr Katarzyna Zechenter is an Associate Professor at the University College London (UCL) School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Her academic journey includes an MA in Polish Literature from Jagiellonian University (Kraków), followed by a second MA (1992) and PhD (1996) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She previously held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Kansas before joining UCL SSEES in 2000.
Her research focuses on Polish literature, Polish-Jewish relations, memory studies, and bilingualism. Notable works include her monograph *The Fiction of Tadeusz Konwicki: Coming to Terms with Post-War Polish History and Politics* and poetry collections like *W cieniu Drzewa* (2011). She also explores contemporary Polish fiction, post-war narratives, and the role of language in diasporic communities.
Dr Zechenter teaches courses on Polish literature, Eastern European cinema, and Polish-Jewish cultural history at UCL. She actively publishes on topics ranging from Nobel laureate lectures to the symbolism of urban landscapes in post-communist Poland. She is fluent in multiple languages, including Polish, English, Russian, German, and French, and contributes to interdisciplinary studies on cultural identity, sociology, and historical narratives.
Her recent publications highlight themes such as Polish-Jewish literary representation, trauma in post-war literature, and the intersection of language preservation with cultural heritage. She is preparing a new poetry collection and continues to advocate for bilingual education through initiatives like *Po polsku na Wyspach*.
