Katariina Holma is a Professor and Dean of Research at the University of Oulu's Faculty of Education and Psychology, specializing in the philosophy of education, democratic education, and the philosophy of science. She has held academic positions at the Universities of Helsinki, Tampere, and Eastern Finland, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on citizenship education, democratic practices, and the integration of philosophical pragmatism into educational frameworks. Holma leads a Research Council of Finland-funded consortium on democratic education (deliberate.fi) and has secured over €2.5 million in grants from institutions like the Academy of Finland and Kone Foundation.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki. Key research interests include education for democracy, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary approaches to citizenship. She has supervised seven doctoral theses, including works on critical thinking, Deweyan intelligence, and Gadamerian hermeneutics. Holma is affiliated with the Philosophy of Education for Democracy and Theory and Philosophy of Education Research Group (TheorEd).
Recent publications emphasize democratic social practices, rethinking educational ideals through Paul Hirst’s philosophy, and pragmatic frameworks for citizenship in sub-Saharan Africa.
