Katalin Farkas is Professor of Philosophy at Central European University (CEU), where she has been employed since 2000 and currently serves as Provost and Academic Pro-Rector. She previously held the position of head of the Philosophy Department between 2007 and 2010, and was promoted through the academic ranks from Assistant Professor (2000-2006) to Associate Professor (2006-2008) before becoming a full Professor in 2009.
Her educational background includes dual degrees in mathematics and philosophy from Eötvös Loránd University, a PhD (1998), and a Doctor of Science degree (2010) from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She has held prestigious visiting positions including the Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship at the University of Stockholm (2008/9), a position created by the Swedish Parliament for outstanding women scholars.
Professor Farkas's primary research focuses on philosophy of mind, with special interest in Descartes, perception, scepticism, and theories of mental content. Her notable publication is the book The Subject's Point of View (Oxford University Press, 2008). Her current research project aims to develop a comprehensive philosophical categorization of all varieties of mental phenomena including perceptual experiences, sensations, imagery, dreams, hallucinations, beliefs, desires, and character traits.
Her research approach uniquely combines traditional philosophical investigation with empirical findings from psychology, demonstrating her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. She has previously held research positions at Eötvös Loránd University as a Research Fellow of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and has been affiliated with Collegium Budapest, University of Sydney, the Center for Subjectivity Research in Copenhagen, and the RSSS at the Australian National University.
Key recognitions include election to the Academy of Europe in 2012 (Membership Number: 3232) in the Section of Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies. Her work represents an important bridge between traditional philosophical inquiry and contemporary cognitive science, offering nuanced perspectives on consciousness and subjective experience.
