Kat Anderson is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Bates College. Her research focuses on nearshore marine ecology and climate change biology, with expertise in marine algae, invertebrates, and ecosystem responses to environmental changes. She holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and has conducted postdoctoral research at Washington State University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prior to Bates, she taught at Bard College.
Dr. Anderson’s education includes a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. Her postdoctoral work expanded her expertise in global marine systems, particularly the impacts of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem stability. She emphasizes innovative teaching methods, including exploring non-heteronormative patterns in nature and alternative scientific communication strategies.
Her research spans climate-driven shifts in marine communities, ocean acidification effects, and thermal tolerance in species. Key themes include predicting ecosystem responses to warming oceans and understanding species-specific vulnerabilities. Recent work highlights how variable temperature regimes and resource availability shape survival and reproduction in marine organisms.
Kat’s teaching philosophy integrates hands-on fieldwork and critical thinking about ecological challenges. She encourages students to engage with interdisciplinary approaches to environmental science. Outside academia, she enjoys reading fiction, swimming, nature immersion, board games, and knitting.
