Kasper Thorup is Professor in Movement Ecology and Section Head at the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate within the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen. He also serves as Scientific Advisor for the Copenhagen Bird Ringing Scheme and holds an affiliation with the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany. Previously, he was Associate Professor in Ornithology at UCPH (2010-2019), Research Associate at Princeton University (2006), and postdoctoral researcher at UCPH (2005-2009).
He holds a PhD in Zoology (2004) and MSc in Biology (2000) from the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on three core themes: Bird Migration (routes, climate change effects, disease spread), Navigation (orientation systems in birds and bats), and Conservation (rare Danish breeding birds). He leads the Bird Migration Lab studying migration patterns, navigation mechanisms, and conservation strategies using technologies like satellite telemetry and geolocators.
Research publications primarily focus on avian migration ecology, navigation systems, climate change impacts on migration patterns, and conservation biology. Recent work emphasizes tracking technologies and spatial analysis of migration data.
