Karri Silventoinen is a Professor at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ) and the Helsinki Institute for Demography and Population Health. He serves as a supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Population Health.
His research spans public health, genetics, and sociology, focusing on cardiometabolic health, obesity, gene-environment interactions, and health inequalities. Recent work includes studies on body size heritability, cognitive development, and social determinants of coronary heart disease.
- Scientific Awards: Best Paper of the Year Award (2013), Geoffry Rose Award for Young Scientists (2006), James Shields Award (2024), Nordic Obesity Excellence Award (2007).
He actively supervises doctoral theses and participates in peer-review activities for journals like Behavior Genetics and Obesity, while leading EU-funded projects such as 'Preventing obesity through Biologically'. Collaborations include the Kyoto International Social Welfare Exchange Centre and CPHS (Centre for Population, Health and Society).
