Karol Sestak is a Research Professor at Tulane University’s Division of Comparative Pathology and External Core Scientist in Immunology and Microbiology. His work focuses on non-human primate models of viral and autoimmune diseases, including rotavirus, calicivirus, coronavirus, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy (a model for human celiac disease). Over 12 years, he pioneered novel models like the rhesus enteric calicivirus (human Norovirus model) and TUCH rotavirus.
- Research Programs: Non-human primate models of GI/autoimmune diseases, gluten sensitivity, rotavirus, calicivirus, gut microbiome
- Commercial Role: Research Director and CEO of PreCliniTria, LLC, consulting on gluten-related disorders and viral pathogenesis
His work involves collaborations with Stanford University, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, NIH, and Arcadia Biosciences. Current projects include pre-clinical trials for gluten-sensitivity prevention and establishing a national colony of genetically-defined gluten-sensitive macaques. He has contributed to 60+ publications, with recent articles (2020-2022) exploring Notch signaling in Marfan syndrome, rotavirus-induced liver fibrosis, and dietary gluten’s role in neurodegeneration.
