Karleen West is an Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations at SUNY Geneseo. Her research focuses on environmental politics, indigenous rights, and Latin American political dynamics, particularly examining the intersections of resource extraction, human rights, and public opinion. She is co-author of 'Who Speaks for Nature? Indigenous Movements, Public Opinion, and the Petro-State in Ecuador' (2019). Her work includes field research with Ecuador's Shuar Arutam community, documenting human rights abuses linked to mining projects.
Prof. West advocates for ethical investment practices, leading efforts to push TIAA (a major educator retirement fund manager) to divest from fossil fuel and extractive industries. She emphasizes aligning retirement investments with environmental and social justice values. Her teaching integrates sustainability curricula, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary solutions for global challenges.
Her research spans decolonization struggles, electoral politics in Latin America, and the impact of decentralization on minority inclusion. She actively engages in policy debates around climate change mitigation, emphasizing the need for corporate accountability in environmental stewardship.
