Craig Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics (2000) and leads international research on lithium extraction politics, climate governance, and Indigenous resource struggles. His work focuses on environmental politics, global development, and the intersections of extractive industries with sustainability goals.
Johnson’s research explores urban roles in global climate politics, resource nationalism in Latin America’s 'Lithium Triangle,' and Indigenous communities’ resilience to climate change in Ecuador. He collaborates with institutions like the University of Toronto’s Global Cities Institute and Ecuador’s Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo. His recent projects include analyzing lithium governance legitimacy and renewable energy transitions.
Publications highlight critical perspectives on EU battery regulations, governance gaps in renewables extractivism, and displacement dynamics in climate policies. He has authored/co-edited multiple books, including The Power of Cities in Global Climate Politics (2018) and Cambio climático y comunidades indígenas en los Andes del Ecuador (2021). Teaching focuses on environmental politics, global development, and humanitarian policy.
