معرفی
Karla Gage is an Assistant Professor of Weed Science and Plant Biology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, holding a cross-appointment between the College of Agricultural Sciences (Department of Plant Soil and Agricultural Systems) and the College of Science (Department of Plant Biology). Her research integrates weed ecology, herbicide resistance, and integrated pest management strategies across diverse ecosystems.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Plant Biology (Weed Ecology focus), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (2013)
- M.S. in Biology, University of Memphis (2006)
Research Focus: Dr. Gage's work centers on understanding weed biology and ecology in both managed (agricultural) and unmanaged (grassland, forest, aquatic) systems. She investigates the efficacy of emerging weed control technologies, the impacts of management practices on weed population dynamics (including "weed shifts" to dominant species), and the evolutionary consequences of herbicide resistance. Her approach emphasizes Integrated Pest Management (IPM), combining biological, cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods for sustainable weed control.
Teaching: She teaches advanced courses in weed science:
- CSEM/PSAS 468: "Weeds and Their Control"
- PSAS 518: "Principles of Herbicide Action"
Publications: Her recent work (2013-2015) has significantly advanced understanding of herbicide-resistant cropping systems, with studies examining weed seedbank dynamics, field emergence patterns, and community-level impacts of glyphosate resistance. These publications collectively highlight the ecological and agronomic challenges posed by herbicide-resistant weeds and propose evidence-based management strategies.
