Karl Sperling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sustainability and Planning at Aalborg University (AAU), part of The Technical Faculty of IT and Design. His research focuses on sustainable energy planning, renewable energy systems, and energy policy analysis, with particular emphasis on Denmark's energy transition and district heating systems. His work spans academic publications, policy advising, and interdisciplinary projects.
He leads or participates in high-impact projects such as COPLEWIC: Collaborative Operational Planning for Local Energy-Wise Communities (2023–2025) and VALCCAP: Local value creation in carbon capture (2022–2025). His research outputs include over 70 publications, with a focus on smart energy systems, community energy ownership, and policy frameworks. He has been cited over 100 times in peer-reviewed journals and media.
Key research themes include: 1) Strategic energy planning for 100% renewable systems, 2) Institutional barriers to wind power ownership models, and 3) The role of district heating in decarbonization. His work integrates technical, economic, and social dimensions of energy systems.
He advises PhD candidates and collaborates with industry partners on projects like REWARDHeat: Renewable and Waste Heat Recovery (2019–2024). Media engagements include commentary on Better Energy’s bankruptcy (2025) and the Klimafolkemødet 2024.
