Professor Karl Schulte (1946–2023) was a renowned materials scientist and head of the Institute of Plastics and Composites at TU Hamburg from 1992 to 2013. He specialized in nanocomposites, carbon nanotubes, and the degradation of fiber composites. His landmark achievement was co-developing aerographite, a porous carbon nanostructure with exceptional mechanical and conductive properties. Schulte earned his engineering doctorate from Ruhr University Bochum (1979) and held leadership roles including Dean of Mechanical Engineering (1996–1998).
His research collaborations spanned institutions like Kiel University, Cambridge, and Kyoto University, with industry partnerships involving Airbus, BASF, and others. He coordinated the 'Carbon Nanotubes for Future Industrial Composites' network and served on editorial boards for journals like Composite Science and Technology. Awards include the DGM's Gold Medal and ICCM's World Fellowship.
Post-retirement, he advised EU/DFG-funded projects and maintained global advisory roles. His legacy includes over 330 publications, 22,000 citations, and an h-index of 69 (Scopus).
