Karl Michael Ziems is a Lecturer in Computational Chemistry at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on the intersection of computational chemistry and quantum computing, with particular emphasis on quantum algorithm development and the study of ultrafast nuclear and electron dynamics in photochemistry and attosecond science. He holds a PhD from the Max Planck School of Photonics, specializing in theoretical chemical physics. Prior to his current role, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Technical University of Denmark as part of the 'Hybrid Quantum Chemistry on Hybrid Quantum Computers' (HQC2) project, and has held research positions at institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
His research interests span quantum computing applications in chemistry, attosecond science, and the development of novel algorithms for molecular simulations on quantum hardware. Ziems is actively supervising PhD students and accepts applications in these areas.
Key research groups include the Computational Systems Chemistry and Digital and Data-Driven Methods. His work integrates theoretical advancements with experimental insights, particularly leveraging attosecond technology for studying electronic dynamics. Recent publications highlight contributions to noise mitigation in quantum linear response calculations and the exploration of NISQ-era algorithm formulations.
