Karl Michael Attard

Karl Michael Attard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), affiliated with Nordcee DIAS, SDU Climate Cluster, and HADAL – the Danish Center for Hadal Research. He also holds a Visiting Professor position at Université Laval.

His research interests focus on ocean ecosystem metabolism, benthic processes, primary production, and carbon cycling in marine environments. He employs advanced techniques such as aquatic eddy covariance to quantify metabolic fluxes across diverse habitats including seagrass meadows, macroalgal beds, and Arctic coastal zones. His work spans from small-scale benthic dynamics to large-scale ecosystem responses to climate change.

His recent publications reveal a strong trend in quantifying ecosystem metabolism under environmental change, particularly in coastal and polar regions. His studies integrate field measurements with biogeochemical modeling, emphasizing the role of marine vegetation in carbon sequestration and the impacts of hypoxia and sea-level rise.

Karl Michael Attard has supervised MSc theses for students at both the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Helsinki. He has received research funding through major projects including EU Horizon Europe’s Cluster 6 on Polar Ocean Mitigation Potential, the Danish Research Councils, and the SCC Elite Centre for Mobilizing Post-Anthropocentric Climate Action (PACA), where he is a project participant and Co-PI on the Climate Future Fiction initiative.

He leads a research group (sdu-lumen.com) focused on ecosystem metabolism and is actively involved in fieldwork, international collaboration, and public engagement through media appearances on topics ranging from youth climate narratives to deep-sea exploration in the Pacific.
