Karl Lemström is a Professor at the University of Helsinki's Department of Surgery (Clinicum) and serves as a Supervisor in both the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and Clinical Research. His career spans cardiothoracic surgery, transplantation immunology, and biomedical sciences since joining Helsinki University Central Hospital in 2000. He leads major national and international projects and has held visiting researcher roles, including at the University of Freiburg (2015).
- Doctor of Medicine (University of Helsinki, 1995)
- Licentiate of Medicine (University of Helsinki, 1993)
- Docent of Transplantation Immunology (University of Helsinki, 1997)
- Docent of Cardiothoracic Surgery (University of Helsinki, 2010)
- Course on Health Care Management (Aalto University, 2007-2008)
With expertise in heart and lung transplantation, Lemström focuses on improving graft survival through molecular biomarkers, immunomodulatory interventions (like statins), and multi-omics approaches. His work bridges clinical practice with translational research, emphasizing precision medicine in transplantation. Over the last five years, he has collaborated across Nordic countries and Germany, advancing donor organ quality assessment via novel imaging and proteomic techniques.
His research output includes 204 publications (2025), with recent 2024-2025 studies on VEGF-A biomarkers, evolocumab therapy, and cell-free DNA validation in heart transplants. He received the Sigrid Juselius 75th anniversary prize (2005) and leads funded projects like "Miksi sydänsiirräinen hylkii tai pettää" (2023-2025) and "Heart donor treatment" (2022-2026).
As a supervisor, he has guided 13 doctoral theses and 9 master's theses, while chairing organizing committees for transplantation conferences (2015). His 123 total activities include peer review, international collaborations, and academic visits, reflecting his central role in advancing clinical transplantation research.
