Dr. Karl Larsen is a Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and an affiliate faculty member at the Irving K. Barber School of Arts & Sciences, University of British Columbia – Okanagan. His research focuses on wildlife conservation, herpetology, and mammalogy, with a particular emphasis on species reintroduction, ecological monitoring, and habitat management. He leads a dynamic lab engaged in projects such as fisher cub rescue and reintroduction, rattlesnake ecology, and small mammal population studies.

Research interests include understanding species' movements, population dynamics, and conservation strategies for threatened or rediscovered species. His lab collaborates internationally, as evidenced by participation in the World Congress of Herpetology in Malaysia and fieldwork in the Northwest Territories. Dr. Larsen has supervised numerous students, including those studying bighorn sheep, road ecology, and rattlesnake behavior.
Recent lab highlights include a plenary talk at the Canadian Herpetological Society conference and student achievements like Chloe’s TRU Master’s Medal in Environmental Science. Collaborations with researchers like Dr. Rulon Clark (San Diego State University) and Dr. Jean-Jay Mao (National Ilan University) underscore his transdisciplinary approach.
