Dr. Karl J.L. Fernandes is a Full Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Medicine. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Brain Aging and Repair and is affiliated with the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) and the Réseau québécois de recherche sur le vieillissement (RQRV). His research focuses on neural stem cells, Alzheimer’s disease, aging, spinal cord injuries, and the effects of exercise and lipid metabolism on brain health.
Dr. Fernandes has led or co-led over 20 research projects funded by institutions like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. His grants include studies on neural stem cell activation, Alzheimer’s lipid metabolism, and spinal cord repair mechanisms.
His research expertise spans stem cell biology, neurodegenerative diseases, and regenerative therapies. He has advised over 8 PhD and Master’s students in topics like Alzheimer’s metabolism, neural stem cell regulation, and spinal cord injury responses. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to improve brain repair strategies in aging and disease.
Dr. Fernandes collaborates with institutions like the CRCHUM and the Central Nervous System Research Group (CNRSG), contributing to Quebec’s research excellence in health sciences. His lab’s current focus includes developing therapies targeting lipid metabolism in Alzheimer’s and understanding neural stem cell responses to environmental stimuli.
