Dr. Karl J. Reinhard serves as Professor of Environmental Archaeology and Forensic Science in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he has been a faculty member since 1989 (initially in Anthropology until 1999, then transferring to Natural Resources in 2000). Recognized as a Fulbright Commission Senior Specialist in Botanical Archaeology with service in Brazil (2001, 2005) and Peru (2007), his career spans over three decades of groundbreaking research in archaeoparasitology.
Reinhard pioneered the concept of pathoecology - studying environmental determinants of disease in ancient populations through analysis of human coprolites. His research integrates parasitology, environmental science, and archaeology to reconstruct prehistoric diets, health conditions, and disease ecology. Recent work has expanded into molecular archaeology, ancient microbiome reconstruction, and sophisticated computational methods for analyzing paleofeces.
