Karl Gerth is the Hwei-Chih and Julia Hsiu Chair in Chinese Studies and Professor of History at the University of California San Diego. His research focuses on Chinese consumerism, market practices under Communist rule, and the global implications of Chinese economic shifts. He holds a PhD in Modern Chinese History from Harvard University (2000) and previously taught at the University of South Carolina and Oxford University (Merton College as Dame Jessica Rawson Fellow & Tutor).
His major works include As China Goes, So Goes the World (exploring China's market economy transformation) and China Made (linking nationalism and early 20th-century consumerism). He leads the Ceres21 Project, investigating climate adaptations in automotive and power industries globally. Awards include fellowships from the British Academy, Fulbright Foundation, and others. His current research examines market survival in China post-1949 Communist rule using archival materials and interviews.
Gerth’s interdisciplinary work bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues like brand nationalism and ecological impacts of consumerism. He maintains affiliations with Tokyo University (via a Japanese Ministry scholarship) and collaborates internationally on environmental projects.
