Karl Axelsson is an Associate Professor at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Södertörn University. He has previously held positions at Uppsala University and the University of Cambridge (King's College). Since 2024, he serves as an Erik Allardt Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS).

His research focuses on aesthetic heteronomy, particularly how 18th-century British and German philosophers connected aesthetic experiences to political society, natural science, and theological discourse. Recent publications include works on Shaftesbury's environmental virtue aesthetics and collaborations with the Cambridge Concept Lab (CCL) to analyze historical networks of aesthetic thought through digital humanities methods. His project Reassessing the Rise of Aesthetics challenges traditional narratives of aesthetic autonomy.
