Karl Alcover

Dr. Karl C. Alcover is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He holds a PhD in Epidemiology from Michigan State University (2018) and a BS in Biology from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. His research focuses on long-term health outcomes of injury, substance use patterns, mental health disparities, and military health epidemiology. He has led the MED READ PRO: Medical Readiness Project (2022-2024), investigating epidemiological methods to enhance military readiness through injury and disease prevention. His work has been featured in multiple media outlets, including reports on veteran health disparities and post-acute COVID-19 complications.

Dr. Alcover’s educational background includes a postdoctoral fellowship in substance use research at Washington State University. His research integrates biostatistical methods with population health studies, addressing topics like racial disparities in drug use initiation, opioid dependence among veterans, and heat-related mortality trends. He actively mentors PhD students pursuing epidemiology and public health.

Key collaborations include projects with the Department of Defense and interdisciplinary teams analyzing trauma outcomes, burn sepsis diagnostics, and ICU care protocols. His systematic reviews and meta-analyses have informed clinical guidelines on military deployment health risks and post-COVID-19 syndrome management.
