Karine Varley is a Senior Lecturer in French and European History at the University of Strathclyde. She holds a PhD and prior academic roles at the University of Durham and Edinburgh. Her research focuses on 20th-century French history, particularly Vichy France, collaboration, and the Franco-Prussian War. Varley has authored/co-edited several books, including Vichy's Double Bind (2023) and A Fascist Decade of War (2020). Her current project, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, examines Franco-British bombing of France during WWII. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Treasurer of the Society for the Study of French History.
Education: BA (Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge), MA (University of Leeds), PhD (Royal Holloway, University of London).
Research interests include French-Italian relations during WWII, memory of war, and Corsican nationalism. Her work has been supported by grants from the British Academy and Carnegie Trust. Varley frequently engages with media, appearing in BBC Radio 4 and documentaries for Netflix and Arte.
Awards include the Archives Portal Europe Grant (2024) and Carnegie Trust Grant (2011). Teaching includes courses on modern European history, war studies, and French language/culture.
