Karina Shimizu is an Invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Lisbon's Instituto Superior Técnico. Her research focuses on the structural and dynamic properties of ionic liquids, particularly their behavior in mixed systems, interfaces, and applications in materials science. She teaches Molecular Dynamics and Chemistry, emphasizing computational approaches to understanding complex fluid systems.
Her work spans ionic liquid nanostructuring, solute-solvent interactions, and their roles in energy storage (e.g., lithium-ion electrolytes), drug delivery (amphotericin B), and environmental applications (gas solubility). Collaborations include studies on halogen bonding, lipid membrane interactions, and hydrotropy. Over 100 peer-reviewed articles reflect her interdisciplinary impact across chemistry, materials science, and bioengineering.
Key themes include: 1) Ionic liquid mixtures' phase behavior and segregation phenomena; 2) Computational modeling of molecular-level phenomena; 3) Biomedical applications of tailored ionic liquids. Ongoing projects address nanostructured domains in ionic liquids and their functionalization for advanced materials.
