Karina Popp is a Visiting Assistant Arts Professor at the NYU Game Center, specializing in game design, development, and critical theory. She holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Mississippi and an MFA in Game Design from NYU. Her work interrogates themes of banality, labor, and bodily experience through interactive media. She has taught at NYU Steinhardt, Hostos Community College, and Parsons School of Design, emphasizing experimental game mechanics and societal critique.
Her research focuses on creating games that bridge art and labor, such as Candy Crunch (2016), which critiques exploitative game systems, and Lysistrata (2024), a political simulation inspired by Aristophanes. Notable projects include 10 Mississippi (2018), a stop-motion narrative of daily routines, and Shit Art (2023), a satirical take on art consumption.
Karina’s games have been showcased at festivals like the Independent Games Festival, Fantastic Arcade, and VGA Gallery. She frequently collaborates in game jams and uses tools like Phaser, p5.js, and Unity to craft immersive, thought-provoking experiences.
