Karina Korecky is a Researcher at the Institute for Ethics and History of Medicine at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Georg-August University. She has held teaching and research positions at multiple institutions including the University of Freiburg, University of Bremen, University of Hamburg, and The Open University in Israel.
Her educational background includes studies in sociology and political science at the Universities of Vienna and Hamburg, graduating from the University of Vienna. She has pursued doctoral research on subject theory and psychiatric experience at the University of Freiburg.
Korecky's research spans the intersection of medical ethics, psychiatry, and social theory. Her work focuses on the history of bioethics, particularly examining the influence of Nazi medicine and the Holocaust on contemporary mental health ethics. She employs sociological approaches to analyze psychiatric institutions, patient experiences, and the historical development of mental health care systems. Her scholarship also engages deeply with political theories of the Enlightenment, subject theory, and feminist perspectives on gender and power.
Her publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory exploring the connections between historical events and contemporary ethical debates in psychiatry. She has produced significant work on the history of psychiatric institutions in the Rhineland, the development of feminist thought, and Enlightenment political philosophy, particularly regarding Rousseau's social contract theory. Her research methodology favors qualitative approaches that center patient narratives and historical analysis.
As an educator, Korecky has taught courses on biopolitics, psychiatry and gender, the history of sociology, and Enlightenment political theory. Her teaching reflects her interdisciplinary approach, bridging sociology, political science, and medical ethics.
Currently, she is working on a German-Israeli research project examining the legacy of Nazi medicine in contemporary mental health ethics, comparing three decades of debates in Germany and Israel (1990-2020), under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Silke Schicktanz, Prof. Dr. Nadav Davidovitch, and Dr. Rakefet Zalashik.
