Karina Benessaiah is Assistant Professor of Human-Environment Geography at the University of Guelph. Her research examines how communities adapt to intersecting social-ecological crises through sustainability transformations.
Research focuses on:
- Resilience pathways during economic/environmental disruptions
- Urban-rural migration dynamics
- Coastal and terrestrial food systems
- Environmental justice in conservation governance
Fieldwork encompasses Greece (post-financial crisis adaptation), Central America (narco-trafficking impacts), and Nicaragua (aquaculture systems). Current projects investigate counter-urbanization patterns and nature-wellbeing relationships during crises.
