Dr. Jemima Baada is an Assistant Professor in UBC Geography, affiliated with the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES). Her interdisciplinary research focuses on gender, climate change, migration, health, and development equity in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly among rural communities and women-dependent agrarian groups. She examines how gendered structures and geopolitical dynamics shape migration outcomes and health inequalities, advocating for inclusive policies that address unquantifiable social costs of climate adaptation.
Her work emphasizes marginalized voices, such as migrant women farmers in Ghana’s Brong-Ahafo Region, exploring their reproductive health challenges, food insecurity, and sociocultural adjustments. She critiques economic-centric adaptation frameworks, urging inclusion of wellbeing and community ties in climate migration discourse.
Dr. Baada’s research spans multiple regions, including Ethiopia, Malawi, and Ghana. Key themes include HIV stigma, agrarian vulnerabilities during crises (e.g., pandemic lockdowns), and climate-driven migration’s paradoxical outcomes. She employs ethnographic methods to document how migration reshapes family structures, cultural practices, and health access in rural settings.
Despite no formal awards listed, her contributions bridge academia and policy, advocating for gender-sensitive climate strategies. Her teaching integrates critical perspectives on development, migration, and health equity, preparing students to address complex socio-environmental challenges in global contexts.
