Karin Steen is a Senior Lecturer and PhD in Sustainability Science at LUCSUS (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies), Lund University. She also works as a pedagogical developer at AHU (Division for Higher Education Development). She holds the distinction of Excellent Teaching Practitioner at Lund University's Teaching Academy, having first been recognized as a Qualified Teaching Practitioner in 2017 and elevated to Excellent Teaching Practitioner in 2020.
Her research focuses on development, gender, sustainability, and social change, with a regional emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa. Steen employs qualitative methodologies, including oral history and constructivist grounded theory, to examine power dynamics and institutional change. Her work particularly investigates how gender intersects with land and labor issues, and she currently explores the role of love as an emotion in understanding vulnerability, sustainability, and development.
Steen's research demonstrates expertise across climate change adaptation, gender studies, and higher education development. Her publications analyze how love and power in intimate relationships influence gendered resource management in agricultural production, combining feminist and development theories to identify strategies that strengthen women's rights to resources.
