Karin Sauer is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University. Her research focuses on understanding biofilm formation and resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with an emphasis on regulatory mechanisms and signaling pathways. She leads the Sauer Lab, part of the Biofilm Group and the Binghamton Biofilm Research Center (BBRC). Dr. Sauer holds a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and MS/BS degrees from Philipps University of Marburg.
Her work addresses how biofilms develop antimicrobial resistance, particularly through posttranslational modifications and gene expression changes. Research interests include biofilm dispersion mechanisms, cyclic di-GMP signaling, and the development of strategies to combat biofilm-associated infections. Notable achievements include identifying the role of cis-2-decenoic acid in biofilm dispersion and advancing understanding of biofilm drug tolerance.
Dr. Sauer has been recognized as a SUNY Distinguished Professor and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Her lab collaborates with other research groups and has trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Key contributions include studies on biofilm matrix dynamics, bacterial communication, and translational approaches to biofilm eradication, such as enzyme-based therapies and surface engineering.
