Karin Landahl is a Professor at the Department of Design within the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business at the University of Borås, Sweden. She serves as main supervisor for doctoral students and maintains an active research profile in textile innovation.
Her research focuses on sustainable textile development with particular expertise in interactive and animated textiles. Dr. Landahl explores how traditional textile materials like linen can be engineered to respond to environmental conditions without requiring electricity or fossil fuel-based components. Her work bridges textile design, material science, and human-computer interaction, creating textiles that transform through natural material properties.

Dr. Landahl's recent publication on high-twist linen yarn demonstrates how woven textiles can be activated by water or humidity, with repeatable actuation after drying. This research offers sustainable alternatives to conventional interactive textiles that typically rely on non-renewable resources.
During 2024-2025, she served as design leader in a significant collaboration between the University of Borås and the United Nations, where design students developed guide clothing for the UN headquarters in New York.
As a doctoral supervisor, Dr. Landahl mentors the next generation of textile researchers, contributing to both academic knowledge and practical applications in the field of sustainable textile design.
