Karin Johansson is a Researcher at Uppsala University's Department of Peace and Conflict Research, specializing in conflict-related sexual violence and civilian victimization in armed conflicts. Her work critically examines international responses including UN peacekeeping operations and diplomatic mechanisms.
Her research focuses on the relationship between sexual violence and conflict dynamics, analyzing how international actors influence protection efforts. Key areas include the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping in preventing sexual violence, diplomatic shaming as a tool against state-perpetrated violence, and the impact of military interventions on gender-based violence patterns in civil wars.
Analysis of her 2015-2024 publications reveals consistent scholarly focus on international institutional responses to conflict-related sexual violence, with increasing attention to bilateral diplomatic mechanisms and norm enforcement within the UN system. Her work demonstrates methodological rigor in examining state and non-state actor behavior through quantitative conflict analysis.
Dr. Johansson teaches Analyzing Arguments in Conflict Studies and Conflict Analysis as course convener, and previously supervised Bachelor theses while lecturing on International Peace and Security. She is an active member of Norway's Research School on Peace and Conflict, contributing to collaborative research networks in the field.
