Karin Hinzer is a Professor and Vice-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa, holding the University Research Chair in Photonic Devices for Energy. She earned BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Physics from the University of Ottawa. Her research focuses on photonic devices for renewable energy, including solar energy systems, semiconductor devices, and quantum dot physics. She founded the SUNLAB, Canada's leading laboratory for high-efficiency solar cell modeling and characterization, and co-led the Inorganic Photovoltaic Group of the Canada-wide PV Innovation Network. She leads the TOP-SET program, a NSERC CREATE training initiative in optoelectronic power systems.
Dr. Hinzer’s awards include the Canada Research Chair (2007–2017), Inaugural Canadian Energy Award (2010), and University of Ottawa Young Researcher Award (2016). She is an IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics editor and has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles, training over 150 professionals. Her lab has spun off three Canadian companies. Her research spans photovoltaic architectures, light-trapping techniques, and energy systems optimization.
