Karin Olson Hoal is the Wold Family Professor in Environmental Balance and Human Sustainability in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University's College of Engineering. She holds PhD (UMass), MSc (McGill), and BSc (St. Lawrence) degrees, with postdoctoral training at University of Cape Town. Her research transforms mineral resource industries through geometallurgy, sustainability integration, and geological risk reduction.
Current work as 2025 Fulbright Distinguished Chair at CSIRO (Australia) develops geology-engineering-community knowledge sharing frameworks for responsible resource development. Research examines geological variability impacts on mining operations, mineral characterization techniques, and sustainable material lifecycle management.
Honors include Society of Economic Geologists Fellowship and leadership roles in SME Sustainable Development Committee. She directs initiatives linking geological data with business outcomes to enhance mineral project viability while minimizing environmental footprints.
