Gawen Jenkin

Professor Gawen Jenkin is a Professor of Applied Geology at the University of Leicester's School of Geography, Geology and the Environment. His research focuses on sustainable mineral resource extraction, particularly for green energy technologies such as solar panels, and the development of environmentally-friendly solvent technologies for metal recovery from ores and waste. He collaborates with industry partners globally and serves on the board of the Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists and has received a Distinguished University Teaching Fellowship (2009).

His work emphasizes novel approaches to reduce mining's environmental footprint through selective metal extraction using deep eutectic solvents and reprocessing mine tailings. He has contributed to projects in Cyprus, Botswana, Scotland, Sweden, and the Philippines, addressing both resource efficiency and ecological preservation. His teaching initiatives have included advising on national geology exam specifications and promoting STEM education through schools' liaison activities.
