Karin Bölenius is Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Umeå University, Sweden, where she also maintains a joint clinical appointment. Her work integrates academic teaching and research with direct clinical engagement, focusing on nursing education, pre-analytical laboratory quality, and person-centred care for older adults receiving home-care services.
Research interests span:
- Organisational prerequisites for effective nurse mentorship
- Pre-analytical errors in venous blood sampling and large-scale educational interventions to reduce them
- Simulation-based teaching of practical nursing skills across Scandinavian education centres
- Self-determination, quality of life and thriving among older adults in home-care settings
- Work environment, job satisfaction and professional competence among registered nurses in Sweden and Norway
Across her extensive publication record (2013–2025) two dominant trends emerge: first, rigorous evaluation of educational and digital interventions aimed at improving clinical competencies and patient safety; second, qualitative and quantitative exploration of person-centred care models and workforce factors affecting quality of care in home-care and primary-care contexts.
Collaborative memberships include the U-Age and U-CHEC research groups at Umeå University, as well as serving on the European Federation for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for the Pre-analytical Phase (WG-PRE).
