Professor Karin Bowie holds the position of Professor of Early Modern Scottish History at the University of Glasgow's Department of History, within the College of Arts. Her research focuses on public opinion, petitioning, and popular politics in early modern Scotland, with particular emphasis on the Union of 1707 and the intersection between religion and culture. She has published extensively on these topics, including her 2020 book Public Opinion in Early Modern Scotland, c.1560–1707.
Research Interests:
- Political petitioning in post-Reformation Scotland
- Popular sovereignty and constitutional frameworks
- Media and public discourse in early modern Scotland
- Religious culture and its impact on political movements
Notable Awards:
- David Berry Prize (Royal Historical Society, 2016)
- Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (since 2008)
Teaching and Academic Service:
- Supervised research on Scottish history topics including Covenanters, monetary union, and East New Jersey colony
- Teaches modules such as Scottish Popular Culture, 1500-1800 and Issues, Institutions and Ideologies of Modern Scotland
- Editorial board member for the Royal Historical Society's New Historical Perspectives
