Karin Bergman is a Researcher at the Department of Environmental Science, Stockholm University. She supports approximately 60 doctoral students as an administrator for the PhD program in Environmental Science, while also coordinating undergraduate and master’s programs. Her responsibilities extend to managing the department’s aquarium system (freshwater and brackish water), used for research and teaching, and editing the department’s newsletter.
Her research focuses on environmental monitoring of amphipod crustaceans like Monoporeia, studying how their reproduction and endocrine systems are impacted by pollutants, oxygen depletion, food quality, and temperature. This work builds on a long-term monitoring program since 1994, linking ecological stressors to sublethal biochemical effects in aquatic species.
The two most recent publications highlight her expertise in thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency in Northern Hemisphere wildlife. The 2021 study on Baltic Sea perch refutes direct thiamine deficiency as a cause for poor recruitment, while the 2016 paper reveals widespread episodic thiamine deficiency in bivalves, fishes, and birds, linking it to environmental stressors like food scarcity. These studies span fields such as ecotoxicology, marine biology, and climate change impacts.
Karin collaborates with the department’s environmental group and web group to advance sustainability initiatives and digital communication. She plays a critical role in centralizing resources for research and education through the aquarium system and newsletter curation.
