Karin Axelsson is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Linköping University (LiU), where she oversees educational strategy, program development, and student welfare across bachelor, master, and PhD levels. She holds a Professorship in Information Systems within the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI) and contributes to the Information Systems and Digitalization (INDIG) division. Her academic career includes roles as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (2018–2021) and Vice Dean (2015–2017).
Her research focuses on e-government, digitalization in public services, smart cities, and the societal impacts of ICT. Key themes include improving citizen and business interactions with public agencies, analyzing tensions in socio-technical systems, and fostering ethical and participatory approaches to technology adoption. She has led projects on electronic identification systems, smart grid services, and multi-channel public service management.
Professionally, Axelsson chairs the Swedish Higher Education Institutions’ AI Working Group and serves on EUA’s Learning & Teaching Steering Committee. She also advises the County Administrative Board of Östergötland and participates in national reviews of higher education quality assurance processes. Her work emphasizes bridging academic research with practical governance challenges.
