Karen Wigen is the Frances and Charles Field Professor of History at Stanford University, specializing in Japanese history and the history of cartography. She holds a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on regionalism, economic transformation, and cartographic history in Japan, with notable works analyzing the silk industry in Nagano Prefecture and the role of maps in shaping modern Shinano. She co-authored The Myth of Continents and co-edited Seascapes, while her upcoming project Cartographic Japan explores maps' cultural significance. Wigen has co-directed the 'Oceans Connect' project and contributed to forums on maritime history in the American Historical Review.
