Karen Weaver, Ed.D., is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE), specializing in college athletics governance, sports finance, and higher education policy. She previously taught at Drexel University for eight years, focusing on sports business leadership and media strategy. Her research examines NCAA governance reforms, athletic conference structures, and the financial challenges facing mid-major and FBS institutions.
Dr. Weaver holds a doctoral degree from Penn GSE, where her dissertation on the Big Ten Network’s creation won national acclaim. She currently leads Penn GSE’s Collegiate Athletics certificate program for senior campus leaders and hosts the podcast Trustees and Presidents: Managing Intercollegiate Athletics. Her work bridges academic research with practical leadership, addressing issues such as facility debt policies, student fees, and the evolving role of athletics in higher education.
Her career spans 30+ years as a Division I/III coach (including a 1986 NCAA DIII National Championship with Salisbury University’s field hockey team) and athletics administrator. Awards include the Penn GSE Young Alumni Award (2011), USA Today Coach of the Year (1986), and multiple institutional recognitions. She has authored/coauthored over 130 Forbes articles and seminal books like Sport Finance (2025).
