Karen Vogtmann is a Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Warwick (since 2013). She previously served as Goldwin Smith Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at Cornell University (2015–present) and held various professorial roles at Cornell (1985–2015) and Columbia University (1979–1986). An elected member of the Academy of Europe (2020), her work lies at the intersection of geometric group theory, low-dimensional topology, and group cohomology.
- Education: B.A. (1971), Ph.D. (1977) from University of California, Berkeley
Her research focuses on geometric group theory, examining groups through geometric and topological methods. She has made foundational contributions to understanding automorphism groups of free groups and outer space, connecting topology, algebra, and combinatorics. Her interests also extend to low-dimensional topology and cohomology of groups.
- Honors/Awards: 2018 Polya Prize (London Mathematical Society), 2017 Honorary Doctorate (University of Copenhagen), 2014 Humboldt Research Prize, 2012 Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (inaugural class), and others.
