Karen Seaward-Patel is an Associate Professor in Media at Birmingham City University (BCU), co-leading the Centre for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Arts (CEDIA) within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media. She holds a PhD from BCU (2014–2018) focusing on The Politics of Expertise in Cultural Labour.
Her research explores diversity challenges in creative industries, craft sector inequalities, and social media’s role in cultural work. Current projects include a UK-Australia grant examining socially engaged craft sustainability and past leadership of the AHRC-funded Craft Expertise project addressing racism in UK craft sectors.
She has authored two books: Craft as a Creative Industry (2024) and The Politics of Expertise in Cultural Labour (2020), and co-edited Craft Entrepreneurship. Her work spans peer-reviewed articles on AI in art markets, craft advocacy, and platform economies.
Grant activities include collaborations with National University of Singapore and RMIT Melbourne. She actively supervises PhD students focusing on creative industries, social media, and craft as industries.
