Karen Saban is a Lecturer for Spanish at the Romance Studies Seminar of Heidelberg University, where she has worked since 2004. Originally from Argentina, she holds a PhD in Romance Philology from Heidelberg University (2010) with a dissertation on Argentine memory fiction about the military dictatorship (1976-1983). She also serves as academic advisor for the Master of Education program and handles recognition of academic credits earned in Spain and Latin America.
Her educational background includes a Licenciatura in General Language and Literature Studies from the University of Buenos Aires (1996-2001), followed by work as an editor and press officer at the university press (1999-2001). She received a DAAD scholarship for advanced training in 2003 and completed her doctoral studies in 2010. She has pursued ongoing pedagogical training through the Baden-Württemberg Certificate for Higher Education Didactics since 2013.
Dr. Saban's research focuses on 20th and 21st century Latin American literature and film, with particular emphasis on memory literature, cultural memory, trauma and violence theories, transculturation and identity construction, migration literature, and phenomena of popular culture in Latin America including tango, comics, and children's literature. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent engagement with post-dictatorship memory representations and transgenerational trauma across multiple Latin American contexts.
Her publications reveal a clear trajectory examining how cultural memory is constructed and transmitted through literary and artistic forms. Early work focused on Argentine memory fiction about the military dictatorship, while more recent publications have expanded to consider transgenerational memory in Chile and Argentina, children's literature addressing state terrorism, and transcultural memory frameworks. She has increasingly incorporated visual media, comics, and film into her analysis of memory representation.
Dr. Saban has received several research stipends including from the DAAD for advanced training in Freiburg (2003), the Secretariat for Science and Research of the University of Buenos Aires (2001-2002), the Literarisches Kolloquium Berlin (2019), and the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (2015). She has served as co-editor of the journal HeLix since 2009 and as co-editor of HeLix Dossiers since 2012.
She actively supervises student research projects, as evidenced by the 'Bitácoras de clase' initiative showcasing exemplary final projects from her seminars. Her teaching integrates language practice with subject-specific didactics and academic content. She has organized numerous conferences and workshops including the international 'Mafalda Colloquium' (2014), the 'Phenomenon of Tango' colloquium (2012), and workshops on migration narratives in 21st century Latin American literature (2022).
