Karen Nelson is a Professor and Director of Research Initiatives at the Center for Literary and Comparative Studies (CLCS) within the University of Maryland's English Department. She also oversees communications and alumni relations for the department and serves as Editor of the Sixteenth Century Journal. Her research focuses on Comparative Literature, Early Modern Studies, and Feminist Theory, with particular emphasis on gendered agency, circulation of ideas, and archival methodologies.
Nelson holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Maryland (1998), specializing in Renaissance and Women's Writing. Her academic leadership spans roles as Associate Director of the Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies (1999–2010), where she secured NEH grants and organized interdisciplinary programs like the Attending to Early Modern Women symposium series.
Her recent work includes editing Feminist Circulations: Rhetorical Explorations Across Space & Time (2021) and presenting at conferences such as the Sixteenth Century Society (2025). Awards include a lifetime achievement award from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women (2014) and recognition for service to her department and discipline.
Nelson teaches courses on Shakespeare, early drama, archival research, and feminist rhetoric. She has pioneered digital humanities projects like the Foldable Banneker Almanac and emphasizes interdisciplinary, globally oriented approaches to Early Modern Studies.
